Ahh, Paris. A destination so elegant and beguiling that cities around the world vie to call themselves the Paris of their respective environs. Beirut, Hanoi, Istanbul and Shanghai are just some of the notables laying claim to a mere association (and all with varying degrees of accuracy).

On Friday, the world’s gaze will fix on more Parisian pomp than usual, as the Games of the XXXIII Olympiad descend on the City of Light, opening three weeks of running, swimming, riding and, for the first time, breakdancing, with 206 countries and territories competing for 329 gold medals.

And while more than 10,000 athletes will be burning competition levels of calories, millions of other visitors will be piling them on, everywhere from humble crêperies to Michelin-starred temples of gastronomy.

These five eateries dotted around the French capital reflect their respective neighbourhoods, each of which has more distinct vibes and attractions than the tourist traps into which many Olympic visitors will be corralled during the Games.
