Meen & Rice serves up Cantonese comfort food in Repulse Bay

Prolific restaurateur Yenn Wong has branched out to The Pulse in Repulse Bay with Meen & Rice, which is said to be the south side's only noodle shop to serve Cantonese comfort food. The eatery is more modern and definitely fancier than your typical dai pai dong.
The menu offers the four Cantonese staples - congee, rice noodles, flour noodles and rice - and a wide selection of stir-fried dishes and delicacies such as deep-fried dace fish balls with clam sauce (HK$68) and deep-fried shrimp toast (HK$78). The creative drinks list includes classic milk tea, lemon tea and yuanyang, and an assortment of home-made lemonades with unusual flavours such as hibiscus and sour grape (HK$35). We started with a bowl of fresh shrimp wonton noodles (HK$42 for the smaller portion), and a sliced pork liver with oyster sauce lo mein (HK$72).
The broth was rich, and the thin yellow noodles had the perfect bounce. We also enjoyed the deep-fried stuffed scallops (HK$248), which came with a refreshing mango sauce. Mains are large and easy to share between groups of family and friends. We tried the fried Angus beef in spicy barbecue sauce (HK$148) and the deep-fried zucchini with salted egg yolk sauce (HK$88). The beef cubes were medium-rare, just the way we liked them, although the sauce lacked spice. We ended our meal with a warming bowl of almond tea with generous spoonfuls of egg white (HK$38).
