CLOSED - Restaurant review: Pop it - kosher dogs, classic or with Asian twist
One of the manyhidden gems in Tai Hang is Pop it. It's a lively new hot dog joint with an old-school vibe. With neon signs, chalkboard art, red plastic baskets for food and vintage ketchup and mustard bottles, the decor sets the mood for the various creative flavours on the menu.
Opened by LA-based owners who also operate Spanish restaurant/bar Guay across the street, the outlet serves hot dogs that are 100 per cent USA kosher beef franks (sad news for swine lovers, but they're working on bringing in a pork version).
Apart from the original American classic dog topped with diced onions, ketchup, mustard and sweet relish (HK$56), there are many mouth-watering items on the menu. For a full-on experience, taste the Dirty Dog (HK$76) with bacon, avocado, green pepper, onion, ketchup and mustard.
The hot dogs themselves are very salty, and with the strong flavour from the toppings the Dirty Dog may have been overwhelming, but it all contrasts well with the shop's slightly sweet locally made buns.
If you're looking for more of a comfort food option, plump for the All-Day Breakfast (HK$86), with crispy bacon, tomato, baked beans, topped with a sunnyside-up egg, or the Cheesy Dog (HK$66) oozing with melted cheddar, parmesan, mozzarella and ketchup.
They have also infused Hong Kong flavours into the mix. The one we like most is the Goo Lo (HK$76), inspired by sweet and sour pork. Though the taste may be a bit strange at first, it is a delicious combination with the sauce, sautéed onions, bell peppers and pineapple. There's also the Bành Mi Dog (HK$76), and for spice enthusiasts the numbing Sichuan Dog (HK$76).
