I Know a Place: Justin Sweeting, Clockenflap music director
Clockenflap HK is in Sheung Wan and I basically need relatively unhealthy doses of rice in my life to maintain happiness levels. To that end, I (and my favourite Hungarian friend, Tony Verb) have a trio of local hotspots on weekly rotation: (200 Hollywood Road, tel: 2546 8947) for its curried beef brisket and signature pork chops, (Po Wan Building, 6 Tai Ping Shan Street, tel: 2549 2505) for fried rice selections galore served in the open air, and (34-38 Stanley Street, Central, tel: 2524 3882) simply for its damn fine char siu.
It's also fair to say I'm a little bit obsessed by (Sen Fat Building, 6A Bonham Strand, Sheung Wan, tel: 2234 5505). Even during the most rushed lunch hours, they never fail to deliver on quick-fire service and maximum deliciousness.
When friends visit, (1 Queen Street, Sheung Wan, tel: 9278 8227) never disappoints with its fine [European] offerings in a traditional local market. Similarly, when we have a little more time with our artists, two bona fide hits are (68 Yee Wo Street, Causeway Bay, tel: 3160 8998) and (1/F 42 Mody Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2366 4012).
When we're out with our three-year-old daughter Iowa and year-old twins Cai and Rhiannon, we're always looking for spots we can enjoy together. (Pui O Beach, Lantau, tel: 5402 4154) with their surf-inspired fare has become the favoured hangout for the whole family. Their fish'n'chips, in particular, are high on the Sweeting agenda.
On the rare occasion I get some time alone with my wife Meg, we've been enjoying the emergence of Asian-inspired, tapas-style sharing plates in places like (1 Elgin Street, SoHo, tel: 2810 0860) and (66 Staunton Street, SoHo, tel: 2194 0202). My wife's a southern Indian thali kind of girl and I'm a northern Indian kind of boy, so any chance to get over to (UG/F, shop 16-17 Wing On Plaza, 62 Mody Road, TST, tel: 2369 3718) for a vegetarian feast is a worthy endeavour.
Closer to home (we live in Discovery Bay) (shop 105B, 1/F D'Deck, Discovery Bay, tel: 2987 0767) is our go-to restaurant of choice, and along with (tel: 6353 3882) over on Peng Chau. We're relatively spoilt for choice for authentic Thai food.
