During her childhood, Nupoor Christian watched her mother take afternoon naps on the floor, and wondered how the hard surface could be more comfortable than a bed. But as a teenager, she gravitated to the floor herself, and found calm and relaxation there.

The 31-year-old learning and development trainer in Hyderabad, India, lies on the floor daily, from 30 minutes to a few hours, either in her home or in the garden.

“This instantly calms me, and helps me control my thoughts and put them at ease,” she says.

Christian uses the time for self-reflection, to brainstorm ideas – and for “grounding”, believing the physical contact with the ground facilitates connection with Earth’s energy.
