Modern Korean restaurant Jungsik’s third Michelin star a milestone for US, New York
Jungsik the US’ first Korean restaurant with 3 Michelin stars, and the first place in New York in 12 years to be raised to guide’s top rank
The United States has its first three-Michelin-star Korean restaurant, and New York its first new entrant to the dining guide’s highest rank in 12 years.
Modern Korean restaurant Jungsik, opened by Seoul-born chef Yim Jung-sik, opened in the city’s Tribeca neighbourhood in 2011 and earned a first Michelin star within a year. In 2013, it added a second star, which it had retained until its recent award of a coveted third Michelin star.
The accolade brings to 14 the number of three-Michelin-star restaurants in the United States. They include the New York restaurants Eleven Madison Park (the last new three-Michelin-star entry, crowned in 2012), Per Se, Le Bernadin and Masa.
Yim also runs Jungsik in Seoul, which has two Michelin stars. A decade ago it was the first Korean venue on the Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list, debuting in 20th place as the highest new entry of 2014.
The New York restaurant serves a modern Korean tasting menu priced at US$295 (HK$2,290).
