Is McGriddles fever over? 5 Hong Kong restaurants serving takes on the breakfast sandwich
- Finally launched in Hong Kong at the end of July, the sweet-and-salty McGriddles breakfast sandwich has prompted several copycats
It was not hard to see what got Hongkongers so excited in the early hours of July 27, and it definitely was not the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympic Games.
For the uninitiated, the McGriddles sandwich has the essential components of the more traditional (egg and) sausage McMuffin, except that the English muffin has been replaced by a thick, fluffy hotcake injected with maple syrup.
There are those who adore its sweet-and-salty contrast, while detractors simply cannot stomach the combination.
After the initial rush that saw branches of McDonald's slammed with diners eager to get their hands on the first batches of the sandwich, and food delivery platform Foodpanda splashing big bucks to get J-drama icon Kimura Takuya for its campaign advertising the sandwich, McGriddles fever has dampened.
Hongkongers have adopted their usual “been there, done that” attitude and moved on. But that has not stopped the Hong Kong restaurants and bars seeking to cash in on the trend.
