A cafe by day and a speakeasy by night, The Holywell’s, in Hong Kong Island’s Sheung Wan neighbourhood, aims to recreate the atmosphere of a house party.

Andrea Mak Yu-ching and Richard Tam Chun-long were working in and around London when they noticed a shift in the social climate following the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns: house parties were on the rise, as was the cost of living.

The couple had got into hosting gatherings at their home in southern England, but eventually decided to return to Hong Kong, where they are originally from.

“Our families are based here,” Tam says. “But on the professional side of things, I think, it’s also the place to be [if you want to] do something interesting.”
