Dim sum, fish balls, pineapple buns, grilled meat: Hong Kong finance worker’s top places to eat in the city
- Hongkonger Lambda Li heads to Seventh Son for old-school Chinese food, Sun Hing for 5am dim sum, and Kam Fung Restaurant for pineapple buns and milk tea
- Neighborhood is her go-to for celebratory meals, Uehara is her pick for sushi and when she craves Korean food she heads to Arirang
Hongkonger Lambda Li is a professional in the finance and derivatives sector, and an occasional blog writer too lazy to keep it up to date. She speaks to Andrew Sun.
My workdays are long and hectic in finance, filled with calls and meetings. My feeding schedule is driven by my dislike of lift congestion and crowds. Efficiency is key, so I go during non-peak hours.
I like to walk through Central for a sandwich or a bowl of noodles/ramen at places like Shugetsu (5 Gough Street, Central, tel: 2850 6009), Shui Kee (2 Gutzlaff Street, Central, tel: 2541 9769) and Pret-a-Manger (various locations). The McWings at McDonald’s (various locations) are my guilty pleasure.
When I feel like splurging, I grab the ox-tongue sandwich from Le Salon de Thé de Joel Robuchon (three locations including Shop 2045A, L2/F, IFC, 1 Harbour View Street, Central, tel: 2234 7422) or the Reuben with sweet potato fries from The American Club’s Town Club (48-49/F, 8 Connaught Place, Two Exchange Square, Central, tel: 2842 7400). The sandwiches are great value for money.
When I am in crisis mode, I go to The Chinnery (1/F, Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong, 5 Connaught Road, Central, tel: 2825 4009) for a chicken tikka solo lunch. The consistency in their service and quality of food gives me assurance that the world is not collapsing. The staff are attentive but not intrusive – an art form that most establishments cannot understand or execute.
On weekends, my daughter and I enjoy our bimonthly sushi dinner at Uehara (Sun Ho Court, 29-31 Tung Lo Wan Road, Causeway Bay, tel: 2359 4700). The addition of texture like chopped cartilage gives a different perspective of the fish.
