The bow, associated in the 1950s and ’60s with fashion icons like actresses Audrey Hepburn and Brigitte Bardot, has taken decades to make its big comeback.

When luxury fashion house Viktor & Rolf sent oversized bows down the catwalk at Paris Haute Couture Week in July 2023, it confirmed one thing – that 2023 is the year of the bow.

Now they are everywhere, from hair accessories to necklines to jewellery, thanks to designers, models and celebrities who have helped to usher in uber-feminine fashion.

Sandy Liang sent models at its autumn/winter 2023 show down the runway with tiny bows in their hair, while Simone Rocha – known for its romantic and voluminous pieces – opted for dainty bows on its models’ faces.

The development has been aided by the growing popularity of balletcore – a style that leans heavily on what ballet dancers wear and that has seen tulle skirts, ballet slippers and bodysuits take over TikTok and Instagram.
