Even though Hollywood power couple Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez have chosen to part ways, the Bennifer phenomenon continues to make headlines.

The couple’s wedding in 2022, 20 years after ending their relationship, divided fans and critics alike. Now, following Lopez’s divorce filing last month, which announced – again – the end of their relationship, many critics are spinning views such as “told you so” or “doomed from the start”.

Still, its ripples have sparked discussions about whether there are deeper lessons to learn from the episode, and has raised the question: “Why do people get back together after a break-up?”

Most people would agree that factors such as emotional attachment play a significant role. Strong feelings may linger even when a connection has faded or broken, leading individuals to believe a bond can be re-established.

Like the power of attachment, nostalgia acts as another magnetic draw. Recalling positive memories can make individuals hopeful that a relationship can be improved and that getting back together is not such a bad idea.
