Trailer for The Witcher IV video game drops with a different character taking centre stage
First glimpse of acclaimed fantasy game’s next instalment shows new protagonist with new abilities and tools
Almost a decade after the release of the The Witcher 3, one of the most acclaimed fantasy games of all time, a trailer has arrived teasing the next instalment in the series.
Polish production company CD Projekt Red, which gained fame through its game adaptations of the Polish fantasy book series, released an almost six-minute-long trailer for its upcoming open-world role-playing game at a Game Awards event in Los Angeles this week.
The fourth Witcher game marks a significant departure from the initial trilogy, in that it no longer revolves primarily around the witcher Geralt of Rivia, but around his adoptive daughter Ciri.
“For the longest time we knew that we wanted Ciri to be the protagonist of The Witcher IV; it just felt natural to us and we believe that Ciri deserves it,” said game director Sebastian Kalemba.
“In this game we want to explore what it means to truly become a witcher by following Ciri on her Path. This trailer is a taste of both that, and just how dark and grounded the world of The Witcher can be.”
More cinematic storytelling than gameplay preview, the trailer begins with villagers preparing to sacrifice a young woman by sending her off towards a monster in the woods, when double-sworded, potion-swilling, sign-wielding Ciri steps in.
