Taylor Swift’s black-and-white video “Fortnight” featuring Post Malone won video of the year, the top honour at MTV’s annual Video Music Awards, on Wednesday.
The “Fortnight” video was released in April to accompany the first single from Swift’s album The Tortured Poets Department, and also landed the best collaboration trophy.
Swift took home seven trophies, tying her with Beyonce for the most lifetime honors in the 40-year history of the video accolades.
“This video seems very sad when you watch it, but it actually was the most fun video to make,” Swift said as she accepted the Moon Person statuette.
After each take, she would hear a cheer from a person across the studio. “That one person was my boyfriend Travis,” she said, referring to Kansas City Chiefs player Travis Kelce.
“Everything this man touches turns to happiness and fun and magic,” she said. “I want to thank him for adding that to this shoot.”

Earlier, when “Fortnight” won best collaboration, Swift praised Malone as “ridiculously talented” and “unfailingly polite.”
Swift, on a break from her record-setting Eras Tour, went into the red-carpet ceremony with the biggest stack of nominations among all artists, with 12.
Winning the first award of the night, she praised Malone as “ridiculously talented” and “unfailingly polite”.
“It has taken me forever to get him to stop calling me ma’am,” she said next to Malone on stage at the UBS Arena outside New York.

Malone returned the compliments, calling megastar Swift “absolutely one of the most kind and talented people I’ve ever had the honour of knowing”.
The black-and-white “Fortnight” video shows Swift in a bleak hospital, a setting she said reflected what she was seeing in her head as she wrote the Tortured Poets songs.
Malone said he watched Swift direct the video while she was strapped to an operating room table on the set. “It was pretty bad a*s,” he said.

Swift’s other awards included artist of the year and song of the summer.
“Fortnight” was competing for the evening’s top honour – video of the year – against Billie Eilish’s “Lunch,” Eminem’s “Houdini,” SZA’s “Snooze” among others.
Eminem opened the show with “Houdini” before country singer Jelly Roll joined him for their hit collaboration “Somebody Save Me”. Women dominated the award show.
Chappell Roan won the MTV Video Music Award for best new artist.

“I dedicate this to all the drag artists who inspire me,” she said in her speech, while wearing chain mail, reading from a written speech in her diary. “And I dedicate this to queer and trans people who run pop. … Thank you for listening.”
Sabrina Carpenter won the trophy for song of the year for “Espresso”.
“This is really special,” she said in her speech, dedicated to her fans. “And thank you to that me-espresso.”

Earlier in the night, she brought her summery-pop to the award show, powering through her hit singles “Please Please Please,” “Taste” and “Espresso” while dancing with a moon man and an alien.
Tyla won the best Afrobeats award.
Katy Perry received the Video Vanguard Award, performing an eight-song medley spanning her career: “Roar”, “E.T.”, “California Gurls”, “Teenage Dream”, “I Kissed a Girl”, “Firework” and “Lifetimes”.
She also teased a new song, “I’m His, He’s Mine,” featuring Doechii, which samples the Crystal Waters classic, “Gypsy Woman (La Da Dee La Da Da)”.

Previous recipients of the Video Vanguard Award include Shakira, Beyoncé, Minaj, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna and Missy Elliott.
Blackpink’s Lisa, the best K-pop award winner, made her way to the VMA stage for the first time as a soloist, powering through two of her brand-new singles, “New Woman” and “Rockstar”.
Shawn Mendes made along-awaited return, debuting a new John Mayer-esq. acoustic number, “Nobody Knows”.

Anitta performed “Paradise”, “Alegria”, and “Savage Funk,” joined by DJ Khaled, Fat Joe and Tiago PZK. Camilla Cabello performed in a panopticon. Benson Boone seemed as stoked as ever to perform his viral hit “Beautiful Things” on the VMAs stage. Lenny Kravitz proved rock isn’t dead with “Are You Gonna Go My Way”, “Human” and finally “Fly”, in which he was joined by Quavo.
