Revolving around a series of abuse allegations against the staff of a Hong Kong residential care centre for the disabled, the second feature of director Lawrence Kan Kwan-chun clearly resonated with voters with its indignant account of the price that investigative journalists are bound to pay in their pursuit of justice.
As was the case in 2023, five films have 10 or more nominations, the others being Nick Cheuk Yik-him’s family drama Time Still Turns the Pages and Felix Chong Man-keung’s financial crime epic The Goldfinger, with 12 each, and Soi Cheang Pou-soi’s absurdist murder mystery Mad Fate and Jack Ng Wai-lun’s legal blockbuster A Guilty Conscience, with 10 each.
Unlike previous years, however, the 2024 awards are completely dominated by the same five front runners: all of them are nominated in the top categories of best picture, best director and best screenplay.
Their closest competitors, musical drama Band Four and family drama Fly Me to the Moon, each have four nominations.

The nominees, announced by organisers on February 6, were chosen from a pool of 50 contending films released in 2023, up from the 33 released in 2022 that contended for nominations last year.
