Postponed by four months because of Hollywood strikes, the Emmy Awards finally took place on Monday, with the last season of Succession scooping multiple prizes.

The HBO show about the back-stabbing dynastic battles of a powerful family won best drama series, best writing and directing, and three acting Emmys, while The Bear led the comedy awards and Beef dominated in the limited series section, in a repeat of the Golden Globes last week.

Succession creator Jesse Armstrong accepted the Emmy for best writing for a drama series, and said: “It was a great sadness to end the show, but it was a great pleasure to do it.”

Kieran Culkin and Sarah Snook won the Emmys for best actor and actress in a drama series, and Matthew MacFadyen best supporting actor in a drama series, for their roles in Succession.

Culkin had twice been nominated for best supporting actor for Succession without a win. But in the final season, in which his character Roman Roy goes from sideline wisecracker to emotional disaster at the centre of the show’s drama, he was put in the lead category and won over castmates Brian Cox, who played his father, and Jeremy Strong, who played his older brother.
