A Squid Game-themed pop-up, techno tai chi and a big-screen anime feast are just three of the things in Hong Kong not to miss this weekend. 1. Kalos x Squid Game 2 pop-up Shopping mall Hysan Place in Causeway Bay has gone Squid Game crazy with a pop-up themed around the hit Netflix series, which dropped a second season last month. Dominating the pop-up is a 2.8-metre-tall copy of one of the show’s characters, Young-hee – the large, motion-sensing doll – as well as three 1.5-metre figures of pink-clad soldiers from Squid Game. Running until February 2, the pop-up is a collaboration with Hong Kong building blocks brand Kalos, which has recreated four scenes from the new series on the basement 2, fifth and 12th floors of Hysan Place. Look out for vending machines filled with Squid Game goodies. Products available exclusively at the pop-up include keychains, piggy banks, magnets and stickers. Young-hee (HK$249) collectibles that stand 25cm tall and a Stairs Room Speaker (HK$219) – a nod to one of the series’ most iconic scenes – are also available. Art & Flow with Techno Tai Chi Take part in an immersive experience that combines traditional tai chi with the energy of electronic music from DJ Swan, as you are guided through flowing movements inspired by Taoist breathwork practices against the backdrop of the art-making centre at Hart House. This collaboration between Nooci, a seller of traditional Chinese medicine remedies with a modern twist, and not-for-profit art organisation Hart has two sessions on Saturday, January 18, from 2 to 4pm, and from 4.30 to 6.30pm. Tea Round 2025 at PMQ Starting today and running until Sunday is the annual Tea Round fair, taking place in the courtyard of PMQ in Central. On Friday, the festival runs until 7pm, and from 11am to 7pm on the weekend days. Bringing together tea aficionados and enthusiasts, the festival features Hong Kong teahouses and representatives from tea brands in Taiwan, South Korea and beyond. The festival programme includes tea workshops and tasting sessions, and a “Pu’erh Corridor” exhibition where visitors can explore vintage Pu-erh teas in a creative time tunnel. For the second consecutive year, the festival will present the opportunity for visitors to try their hand at Fucheng tea sealing, a tradition by which tea leaves are sealed in jars along with a blessing or wish – perfect for the lead-up to the Lunar New Year. There will be opportunities to try and buy teas throughout the weekend, and Tai On Coffee & Tea will sell sweet treats such as hojicha mochi tarts to have with your tea. Attack on Titan: The Last Attack Attack on Titan is one of the most successful manga series of all time, selling more than 140 million copies since publication began in 2009. Hajime Isayama’s epic blend of fantasy, horror, military adventure and coming-of-age drama ran for more than 11 years before concluding in April 2021. The Attack on Titan anime series, which spans four seasons and 94 episodes, has been entertaining fans around the world since 2013. Audiences now have the opportunity to revel in the show’s blistering finale on the big screen. Fans of the series will already know the outcome, as the events were unveiled as a pair of television specials. Attack on Titan: The Final Chapters parts one and two originally aired in Japan in March and November 2023 respectively, and were later cut and rebroadcast as six 20-minute episodes. Now they have been reconstructed for Attack on Titan: The Last Attack, a 145-minute film with newly remastered Dolby 5.1 surround sound. Tai Kwun Contemporary in Central has just unveiled the 46-year-old Polish-born artist’s first institutional exhibition in Hong Kong, including a site-specific public art commission called Waiting Pavilions that draws on the history of Tai Kwun’s Prison Yard as a place of waiting and confinement.
