Our pick of the best shows and exhibitions this weekend includes the Freespace Jazz Fest and Chung Ying Theatre’s Little Shop of Horrors
From a major jazz festival and an adaptation of an off-Broadway musical to niche art exhibitions and a Chinese painting masterclass, here are five of the best shows to catch this weekend in Hong Kong.
1. WestK – Freespace Jazz Fest 2024
This weekend sees the largest and most international edition so far of the Freespace Jazz Fest, an annual event held at the West Kowloon Cultural District that this year spreads over four days.
A double bill of jazz trios on Friday at The Box will see the Ariel Bart Trio and Rémi Panossian Trio showcase contrasting sounds, styles and influences. The Ariel Bart Trio from Israel play European contemporary jazz mixed with Middle Eastern elements, while the Rémi Panossian Trio from France energetically mix jazz, pop, funk and rock.
On Friday and Saturday, a Hong Kong crossover show at Wonderland will celebrate local jazz music. Cantopop group RubberBand will perform both their own songs and popular Hong Kong film soundtracks, with their long-time collaborators the Patrick Lui Jazz Orchestra adding their big band jazz arrangements to the show.
On Saturday, American jazz legend Herbie Hancock will perform in Hong Kong for the first time in more than a decade as part of his 2024 Fall Tour. Joining him on stage at Wonderland will be Grammy-winning trumpeter Terence Blanchard, guitarist Lionel Loueke, bassist James Genus and drummer Jaylen Petinaud.
Freespace: Jazz Fest, West Kowloon Cultural District, Oct 24-27. Tickets available from the WestK website.
