This weekend is one to take in all the art, from the new Art021 Hong Kong art fair and peripheral exhibitions to the annual Booked: Hong Kong Art Book Fair at Tai Kwun.
Here are five to check out before the week is done.
1. Art021 Hong Kong art fair
The Shanghai-based art fair operator is launching its first event in Hong Kong this week and it is spread across four venues.
A standard ticket (HK$300/US$38) includes access to the main art fair with 40 booths at auction house Phillips’ Asia headquarters at the West Kowloon Cultural District, as well as an art and music programme held at the Fringe Club in Central on Hong Kong Island (tickets here).
Separately, a number of art films will be screened at the Asia Society Hong Kong Centre in Admiralty, with standard tickets costing HK$50 each (tickets and listings here).
There is also a sculpture park at Victoria Park, in Causeway Bay, which is free, and one work installed on the Fringe Club’s roof (which can be seen from the street).

2. Booked: Hong Kong Art Book Fair
The 6th edition of what has become a landmark event in the city’s cultural diary takes place from August 30 to September 1 at the Tai Kwun heritage and arts centre compound in Central.
This year’s art book fair will take place on all floors of the JC Contemporary art gallery and features more than 110 artists, publishers, organisations and other booksellers from around the world.
A standard ticket costs HK$40 and includes access to a wide-ranging programme of talks and performances. There is also a special project that focuses on how artists playfully raise questions about the circulation of knowledge.

3. Lee Mingwei: Sonic Blossom live performances
Years ago, while he cared for her during her recovery from surgery, Taiwan-born artist Lee Mingwei and his mother found comfort in Austrian composer Franz Schubert’s music. In 2013, he used that shared experience to create a performative work called Sonic Blossom. This work can now be experienced at the M+ art museum.
Every afternoon, a singer dressed in a robe will approach museum visitors at random and give them a live performance of a Schubert lied – a song that will briefly, but powerfully, connect the performer and the audience.
A museum ticket is required for access – the museum is closed on Mondays. Details can be found here.
Focus Gallery, L2, M+, 38 Museum Drive, West Kowloon. Live performances are scheduled between 2pm-5pm on Tuesdays-Thursdays and weekends, and between 2pm-6pm on Fridays. Until September 29.
4. A.A. Murakami: Floating World installations

The artist duo A.A. Murakami’s immersive installations, described as an “otherworldly” experience, open this weekend in The Studio at M+, to which entry is free.
One work features physical fog rings travelling into the digital realm, and the other “an environment of floating bubble clouds”. These large-scale installations question our ideas about reality, artifice and our increasingly digital lives.

5. Southside Saturday free tour
Since 2020, the Hong Kong Art Gallery Association has been organising one-day free tours of its member galleries in the southern part of Hong Kong Island – Aberdeen, Tin Wan, Wong Chuk Hang and Repulse Bay. The August 31 edition, which will coincide with Art021, features 17 leading galleries.
