Shanghai museum's Art Basel show features Gu Changwei photos and video
Chinese city's Museum of Contemporary Art is marking its 10th anniversary with Hong Kong show
Shanghai's Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, and its founder Samuel Kung decided to kick off its celebrations with a show at this year's Art Basel Hong Kong.
The show features a set of photographs and a video by Chinese cinematographer and director Gu Changwei (Farewell My Concubine, 1993; Peacock, 2005), and Kung says he hopes to introduce this collaboration between MoCA and the award-winning filmmaker to an international audience.
The video, entitled 6:40:00 2014, will be screened at Art Basel at the Convention and Exhibition Centre at 5pm on Saturday.
Gu says the video was inspired by the image of the Great Hall in Tiananmen Square, Beijing on the 100-yuan banknote. He says it is the most recognisable of all Chinese banknotes and is symbolic of contemporary China. Asked to elaborate, he said it's up to the viewers to interpret.
Kung said MoCA would stage two large exhibitions in June and November, as well as a travelling exhibition for Animamix Biennale for 2015-16 with the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in Taiwan, the Daegu Art Museum in South Korea, the City University of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre/Oi!, the Macau Museum of Art and Chengdu's Blue Roof Museum.
