Your guide to emerging artists in Hong Kong's galleries and studios

Creative talent on show everywhere, writes Catharine Nicol

The Convention and Exhibition Centre isn't the only arty arrow to the city's creative bow this week. It is worth checking out some of Hong Kong's emerging artists in various galleries and studios around town, including the newly opened PMQ at the site of the old Police Married Quarters, where artists and designers can thrive. "By bringing in all the internationally renowned galleries and collectors, Art Basel Hong Kong provides opportunities for the local art scene to grow and flourish," says PMQ creative and programme director William To.

"PMQ hopes to become a strategic partner of Art Basel and an alternative destination for incoming visitors during this busy week, giving creative fans a glimpse of our local creative talent and their work."

Central's newly opened design hub has breathed new life into the old Police Married Quarters, with a wide selection of emerging designers taking over the former residential units with retail space and workshops. Every weekend the central courtyard holds night markets, and during Art Basel Hong Kong, Britain's Fredrikson Stallard's giant installation , presented by Swarovski, will be on show until Sunday, and the finished mural

The former slaughterhouse was built in 1908 and exchanged its rolling tenants of 120 cattle, 200 lambs and 400 pigs for 20 artists in 2001. The Grade II listed site is in need of repair, but several artists and artist groups remain. An industrial home to a number of local artists and art workshops, ChaiWanMei 2014, the third edition is created to coincide with Art Basel Hong Kong. The two-day art and design festival is co-organised by 10 Chancery Lane Art Projects and Platform China.

Saturday's CWMVILLAGE includes designer talks by General Assembly, live graffiti and screen printing sessions, a pop-up shop with 15 designers, a food stall at Chaiwanese and more. The Fo Tan Arts Studio units form more of a private than publicised arts community, but each January the Fotanian - Open Studio Programme festival takes place, showcasing the studios, which are transformed into galleries and venues for talks and workshops.

This Grade II listed building turned creative space works with the Hong Kong Visual Arts Centre to provide workshops for the public. During Art Basel check out , an installation that features Kingsley Ng and Meta4 Design group, both from Hong Kong, and renowned Argentinian artist Leandro Erlich (running from Saturday to July 8).

The Osage Art Foundation has been supporting the education and training of young artists since its launch in 2004. The exhibition "Market Forces - Erasure: From Conceptualism to Abstraction", is jointly presented with City University, featuring artists from Hong Kong, Singapore, the Philippines, Japan, South Korea, Indonesia and Thailand. The opening receptions at Osage and City University run from 5 to 7pm tomorrow. www.oaf.cc

The Art Bus leaves from Art Basel every 30 minutes from 11am to 5pm until Monday, looping around the Hong Kong Museum of Art, Cattle Depot Artist Village, Osage Art Foundation, Oi! and the Hong Kong Arts Centre. www.hkac.org.hk/en/calendar.php?id=1384
