Dragon at the doorstep: Myanmar’s changing ties with China

In a special report, the examines Myanmar's enduring links to China, its largest trading partner, ahead of the Southeast Asian country's first free general elections in a quarter-century in 2015.

In a special report, the South China Morning Post investigates how ethnic Chinese residents and Chinese companies have adapted to the sweeping political changes in Myanmar over the last years and changing attitudes towards Myanmar's giant neighbour.

The series looks at jade trade and smuggling along the porous Myanmar-China border. It follows a Chinese state-owned hydro-power conglomerate lobbying for the construction of Myanmar's biggest dam to provide electricity to China's Yunnan province.

It visits activists hiding from politics as they organise demonstrations against a copper mine run by a subsidiary of a Chinese arms manufacturer and follows the landmark trial of a group of journalists facing up to 14 years in jail for reporting on an alleged Chinese chemical weapons factory.
