It may have escaped the notice of Nicholas Rogers, but it was Europe versus the United States in last month’s Ryder Cup – not the European Union versus the US (“UK will regret leaving the EU, and not just because of the Ryder Cup”, October 2).

Personally I would support the Ryder Cup reverting to its roots and once again being just the UK and Ireland versus the US. A pipe dream, of course.
One only has to look at the UEFA European Championship and the Six Nations Championship to appreciate that what it all comes down to at the end of the day is national identity, national pride and national flags, fundamentals that the bureaucrats in Brussels will never destroy (“‘Press freedom has limits’: top EU official slams UK newspapers”, October 6). The harder they try, the stronger they become.
