Airbus A350 makes maiden flight
The latest jet from Europe's Airbus makes its maiden flight at the company's Toulouse base in southwest France. The development of the A350 has taken seven years and cost the company US$15 billion. Airbus hopes its first aircraft built mainly from lightweight carbon composites will reduce US rival Boeing's lead in the market for long-haul, wide-bodied jets where it offers the 787 Dreamliner.
 
Rusal holds AGM amid controversy
Hong Kong-listed aluminium giant Rusal holds its annual general meeting in the city, with doubts over the future of its one remaining local director. Sual Partners, which owns 15.8 per cent of Rusal, has tabled a resolution to remove former Secretary for Justice Elsie Leung Oi-sie from the board after the company's former chairman, Barry Cheung Chun-yuen, stepped down in controversial circumstances last month.
 
ESF chiefs look to the future
Officials from the English Schools Foundation meet parents at West Island School to offer an update on the government decision to withdraw the ESF's subvention. The long-frozen HK$283 million annual subsidy will be withdrawn for new pupils from 2016, a change expected to lead to a 23 per cent increase in fees. The meeting is part of a series of behind-closed-doors talks with parents at ESF schools.
 
Iran elects Ahmadinejad successor
Iran goes to the polls in a presidential election to replace controversial leader Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Voters have six candidates to choose from - a slate dominated by conservatives who tout their loyalty to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and offer little in the way of real policy differences. Moderates and reformists have united behind centrist cleric Hassan Rohani, hoping to attract the vote of Iranians looking for more freedoms and better relations with the West.
 
Red Cross discusses aborted scandal probe
The social supervision committee of the Red Cross Society of China discusses its decision not to reopen an investigation of the Guo Meimei scandal. The committee said it would reopen the case in April, but later reversed its decision. Guo made headlines in 2011 by claiming to be the group's "commercial general manager" in blog posts showing off luxury cars. An investigation found no link between Guo and the Red Cross, but shed light on rampant mismanagement of Red Cross funds.
 
Lamma ferry tragedy captains in court
The captains of the two vessels involved in the Lamma ferry tragedy make another appearance in Eastern Court. Chow Chi-wai, 56, captain of Hongkong Electric's Lamma IV, and Lai Sai-ming, 55, captain of the Sea Smooth, operated by Hong Kong and Kowloon Ferry, are each charged with 39 counts of manslaughter in connection with the tragedy on October 1.
