Tenders close for Kai Tak sites
Bidding ends on two closely watched residential sites offered for tender by the government. The tender is the first under the "Hong Kong Property for Hong Kong people" scheme, and the sites are the first to be released for sale in the Kai Tak new development area. Developers are expected to adjust their bids downwards as they can be sold only to permanent residents, although the total price is still expected to reach up to HK$4.4 billion.
 
Shangri-La Dialogue opens in Singapore
International luminaries including US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel gather in Singapore for the Shangri-La Dialogue. Vietnam's Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung delivers the keynote address on the opening day of the defence conference, which runs until Sunday. The conference has become "the key regional forum for discussing important defence and security concerns", according to its organiser, the International Institute for Strategic Studies.
 
Xi sets off for Latin America
President Xi Jinping jets off to Latin America and the Caribbean, looking to build links with more of the emerging economies Beijing has cultivated in its rise to global influence. Xi's visit to Trinidad and Tobago, Costa Rica and Mexico follows his first foreign trip to Russia and three countries in Africa shortly after taking office in March. After visiting Mexico, Xi travels to the United States for his first meeting with US President Barack Obama next week.
 
Work by 9,000 children on display
Artwork from some 9,000 young Hongkongers goes on display at Cityplaza as part of a charity project to raise money to fight blindness and visual impairment around the world. The pupils from 86 schools have each created an eight-point star for the "seeing is believing" project by the Youth Arts Foundation and Standard Chartered Bank. They will be on display at the mall for five days.
 
Fifa to vote on reform proposal
World soccer chiefs meeting in the Maldives vote on a package of measures designed to stamp out corruption in the world game and its ruling body. Integrity checks for executive committee members and other senior officials are among the proposals to be put to the 209 members of Fifa. Critics say the plan, developed over the past two years, is not enough to clean up the image of the world game.
 
Elsie Tu celebrates her centenary
Veteran of the Hong Kong political scene and dogged campaigner for social justice Elsie Tu celebrates her forthcoming 100th birthday with a banquet at Kitec in Kowloon Bay. Tu, who celebrates her centenary on Sunday, was born in Newcastle, England, but has called Hong Kong her home since 1951. Having served as a lawmaker and urban councillor, Tu recently came out in support of striking dockers, condemning "some rich men who seem to have no conscience".
