Besides feeding us, regulating our climate and generating most of the oxygen we breathe, the seas around us have been a great source of inspiration for cosmetics brands. Now the two come together to mark World Oceans Day on June 8 – an annual event created in 1992 and officially recognised by the United Nations in 2008. La Mer and Biotherm will both have special campaigns to recognise the importance of our oceans and support their protection.

La Mer

Cult cosmetics brand La Mer was practically born from the sea, thanks to founder Dr Max Huber’s discovery of the healing and moisturising power of sea kelp. The company has been partnering with the National Geographic Society for the past two years in support of World Oceans Day, raising almost US$2 million for ocean conservation efforts. This year, La Mer is honouring the work of Dr Andrea Marshall, an Emerging Explorer working to save manta rays and other vulnerable species through her Marine Megafauna Foundation

“If I had one wish, it would be that we could find a greater sense of balance with nature, give back to our oceans as much as we take from them,” says Marshall. “We must learn to respect and take care of our ocean like our life depends on it...because it does.”

La Mer has set up a website with more information on World Oceans Day, and is offering a limited-edition 100ml jar of Crème de la Mer (HK$3,950) from June 1. Available at La Mer counters and stores.
