Lonely Chinese V-Day for most young urban labourers
More than 60 per cent of migrant labourers born since 1980 will spend today, Chinese Valentine's Day, alone, says a report published yesterday by Daguu.com, a portal news website targetting urban minimum wage readers. The survey, based on answers provided by nearly 19,000 Daguu readers from across China with an average age of 23.6 years, also finds that of those currently involved in a relationship, slight less than half expect the relationship to last more than a year.
China's largest-ever gutter oil trial opens
A trial involving China's largest ever prosecution of the "gutter oil", recycled cooking oil, industry began yesterday at the Intermediate People's Court in Ningbo, Zhejiang province, involving more than 20 defendants. Seven of those have been charged with manufacturing and selling more than 99 million yuan worth of the dangerous product since 2007 to a Henan-based company which went on earn more than 350 million yuan in profits.
Sinopec shares details on overseas operations
Speaking yesterday at the Second China Overseas Investment Summit in Hong Kong, writes Caijing, Sinopec chairman Fu Chengyu said that the Beijing-based oil and gas company currently has a total of more than 600 billion yuan (HK$734.24 billion) invested in various projects spanning 55 countries. Fu added that the company also employs more than 30,000 people through its overseas operations, more than 80 per cent of whom are locals.
Six mainland cities to allow passport applications for non-locals
Beginning September 1, according to the Beijing Times, Chinese citizens working or studying in Beijing who lack local household registration, or hukou, will be able to apply for a passport in the city. The new regulations will simultaneously be rolled out in Beijing, Tianjin, Shanghai, Chongqing, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen. Currently, those who wish to travel outside the mainland must submit passport applications through authorities at the location of their hukou address.
Indian intelligence agencies warn of China attack on country's power grid
Indian intelligence agencies appear ready to blame China for massive power outages across the country last month in a new report which suggests that if computer hardware and parts used in the electrical grid which are imported from China are not components of a stealth war being waged against the country, 2017 is when such an attack could become a real threat.
Mengniu hit with another milk scandal
Major Chinese dairy manufacturer Mengniu has another scandal on its hands after police in Zhejiang province alerted media that a sales manager for the company in Yiwu, along with another suspect, have been detained for altering the dates of manufacture on over 5,000 boxes of Mengniu milk and yoghurt by nearly half a year which the pair continued to to supermarkets throughout the province until one supermarket shopper's demand for a refund led to a complaint being filed with the local administration for industry and commerce. Meanwhile, new Mengniu CEO Sun Yiping told the Beijing Times yesterday that she intends to restore the company's reputation starting with a return to manufacturing baby formula.
