Hong Kong's most enterprising smaller companies are the focus of a new business awards programme unveiled yesterday by the South China Morning Post.
The 2014 Enterprising Hong Kong Awards, sponsored by DHL Express Hong Kong, will recognise the outstanding achievements of start-ups and small and medium-sized enterprises in the city.
SCMP Group's chief operating officer Elsie Cheung, speaking at a meeting of the judges, said the awards would "shine a light on companies' excellence".
A wide array of prizes is available for nominees and finalists. The winners will receive HK$10,000 worth of shipping credit from DHL and a special advertising rate from the Post, as well as a number of other rewards.
"We are very pleased to support the first-ever enterprise award in Hong Kong," said DHL Express Hong Kong vice-president Ecila Chan.
"[The awards] will recognise the outstanding achievements of SMEs and entrepreneurs in Hong Kong."
Small and medium-sized enterprises are vital to the city's economy. Roughly 320,000 small businesses were operating in Hong Kong as of March, according to government data, supporting about 1.3 million jobs - or about 47 per cent of total employment in the city, excluding the civil service.
Hong Kong categorises SMEs as manufacturers with fewer than 100 staff and service firms with fewer than 50 employees. Most of those enterprises in the city are in the import/export business, wholesaling and retailing.
There are nine award categories: Young Entrepreneur, Corporate Social Responsibility, eBusiness, Innovation Excellence, Export Excellence, Regionalisation, Brand Excellence, Best Customer Service and the Achiever's Award.
The awards will be presented at a gala dinner on September 25 that will be attended by more than 250 guests.
The Brand Excellence and the Best Customer Service award categories are open to public voting between July 21 and August 1.
The Achiever's Award will be chosen by the judging panel, which comprises DHL Express Hong Kong's Chan, SCMP business editor Nick Edwards, Platinum Group managing director Liu Chee-ming, DBS Bank (Hong Kong) institutional banking group managing director Alex Cheung, Hong Kong Polytechnic University vice-president Angelina Yuen, Hong Kong General Chamber of Commerce SME committee chairman Cliff Chan and Hong Kong Productivity Council director of business management Gordon Lo.
