Petteri Taalas
Professor Petteri Taalas is secretary general of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). He was previously director general of the Finnish Meteorological Institute from 2002–2005 and 2007–2015 and director of the WMO development and regional activities department from 2005–2007. He has a PhD in meteorology from the University of Helsinki.

The creation of a major new initiative by three UN agencies will close the gaps in data undermining our understanding of the climate and extreme weather. The initiative will enable the world’s most vulnerable communities to get ahead of the curve and build resilience.
