Oprah Winfrey
The talk show host declared herself 'one proud mama' as she attended the first graduation ceremony of South Africa's Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, an elite school she founded at Henley on Klip, just outside Johannesburg. Some 72 students matriculated with 188 distinctions and are now bound for universities in South Africa and the United States. The school, which reportedly cost Winfrey US$40 million, was beset by a scandal in 2007 involving sexual abuse by one of its staff.
Anne Sinclair
The journalist wife of the former head of the International Monetary Fund Dominique Strauss-Kahn has been appointed editorial director of the French edition of the Huffington Post, a joint venture involving AOL, the owners of the original Huffington Post, and the French daily newspaper Le Monde. Sinclair brushed aside questions about her level of objectivity, with her husband still in the media spotlight over a series of sexual scandals and the couple having filed lawsuits against several French newspapers following Strauss-Kahn's acquittal on rape charges in New York. 'I think I still have something to bring to the profession,' said Sinclair.
Jude Law
The British actor received GBP130,000 (HK$1.56 million) in damages from the publishers of The Sun and now-defunct News of the World newspapers, the highest of 36 payouts to victims of the tabloids' phone hacking. Law's ex-wife, Sadie Frost, was awarded GBP50,000. Christopher Shipman, the son of mass murderer Harold Shipman, received an undisclosed amount for the interception of e-mails containing sensitive legal and medical information.
