US law enforcement agencies have been training and sharing experiences with officers from Hong Kong's Immigration Department and police in the ongoing battle against people smugglers.
Luis CdeBaca, director of the Office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons, said the training took place over the past two months.
The US enforcement agencies involved were the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Justice and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement departments.
The training comes as the flow of illegal South Asian immigrants into the city continues. Police detained eight South Asian illegal immigrants off Sai Kung a week ago.
About 1,000 non-Chinese illegal immigrants were arrested from January to September, compared to 860 for the same period last year.
The rise has been attributed to a court ruling in March that found illegal immigrants waiting for torture claims to be assessed could work in Hong Kong.
