Paramilitary police across the mainland took part in induction ceremonies on Tuesday, taking an oath to protect the country and maintain peace and order during National Day celebrations this year and the World Expo next year in Shanghai.
A month ahead of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic, thousands of People's Armed Police (PAP) in Beijing, Shanghai, Xinjiang , Tibet and at four other bases declared their loyalty, Xinhuanet reported.
They will be responsible for tasks such as security checks, anti-terrorism operations and maintaining stability in the sensitive Xinjiang and Tibet regions.
Police in areas surrounding Beijing have also been ordered to tighten security and to act as the capital's 'moat'. General Wu Shuangzhan, commander of the 660,000-strong PAP, asked the officers to prepare for the worst with detailed plans and specialised training.
