The man injured 24 people in the city of Jixi. The city's deputy police chief said the suspect, Zhang Xijun, had driven a jeep into the market while people were eating dinner.

He said hitting people with a vehicle was regarded as endangering lives, property and safety, and Zhang could face between three and 10 years behind bars.

The Heilongjiang Morning News said Zhang had run over a child's foot and then reversed, killing an old woman and hitting other pedestrians before smashing into a barbecue restaurant.

Police said Zhang, who worked at a mining machinery company, had been out drinking with friends before the incident. His driver's licence was suspended in 2004.
