The pair were among a group staying at the new Le Meridien Shimei Bay Beach Resort and Spa, on a beach deemed unsuitable for swimming. They were on the second day of a tour organised by Hong Kong travel agency Evergloss Tours.

Evergloss executive director Steve Huen Kwok-chuen said the pair got into difficulty at about 4.30pm yesterday, while spending free time at the beach, 30 kilometres southwest of the city of Wanning. Other tourists and hotel staff called for help.

One man in his 40s, surnamed Lo, was dead when he was taken from the water, while the other man, surnamed Chu, aged about 30, was missing, Mr Huen said. Rescue efforts were continuing last night.

The group of 20 to 30 tourists began their four-day Hainan tour on Sunday.

Mr Huen said the 6-kilometre beach was unsuitable for swimming and had no lifeguards.
