A judiciary official and a former cadre were taken away for investigation in Chongqing on suspicion of taking bribes. In Shanxi, meanwhile, the former committee secretary of the provincial Communist Party has been charged with embezzling state-owned resources while acting as a company director.
Zhang Tao, vice-president of Chongqing High Court, and former executive chief judge Wu Xiaoqing were being investigated for financial problems, sources told Caijing Magazine yesterday.
Mr Zhang, 46, has been vice-president since 2002. He was named one of the municipality's top 10 legal experts in 2006 and is a part-time professor at the Southwest University of Political Science and Law. His last public appearance was on May 14, when he spoke to the media about fighting crime in Chongqing.
Mr Wu was removed as executive chief judge in 2005 and has been the principal of Chongqing Judicial College since then.
In Shanxi, the provincial party disciplinary inspection committee announced yesterday that Feng Qifu, a former party secretary who retired in 2004, was arrested and expelled from the party for embezzling state-owned resources when he chaired Zhonglu Energy Resources, a state-owned firm.
He had been a consultant for the company since 1998 and chairman between 2002 and last year, before he was removed from the post.
