Bailout? What bailout? For one night at least, the good old days of extravagance returned as carmaker Audi threw a lavish event on Friday at the Shaw Studios in Tseung Kwan O for its new high-performance A6 ride.
Instead of the recession or slump in car sales, the buzz was the mini Sandy Lam Yik-lin concert awaiting Audi owners at the bash. Music seems to be their preferred promotional tool of late. Previously Audi threw parties featuring Lang Lang and Harlem Yu Ching-hing.
Managing director Got Chong-key said the carmaker experienced 'unprecedented growth' in Hong Kong last year. Of course, this was when people were still buying cars. But the German firm remains optimistic, splashing out when others are liquidating.
In addition to free booze and canapes other entertainment included a pair of tango dancers (to symbolise the car's passion), a golfing simulator cage (to express its sporty side) and two actors pretending to act out a scene (we have no idea what the point of that was).
However, the main attraction was Lam (below), who whirled her way through about seven numbers with backup dancers and a four-door sedan crowding the stage. It was fun while it lasted, but we suspect there won't be another of these parties for a while.
