He was one of three people on the shrimp boat when it was hit by the CotaiJet catamaran The Venetian 7.5 nautical miles off Macau at 11.44am.

The ferry, bound for Macau's Cotai Strip resort area, had left Hong Kong at 11am with 130 passengers and 13 crew.

The three people on the shrimp boat were plucked from the sea by rescuers including Macau customs divers and the crew of a nearby fishing boat, Macau's Maritime Administration said. But the captain was declared dead later in hospital.

The other occupants of the boat, a man and a woman who were slightly injured, were also taken to hospital, along with a male ferry passenger.

It was the third accident involving the ferry operator, owned by the Venetian Macao Resort Hotel, in just over two months.
