While some want a little luck going into the individual showjumping finale, others already feel lucky the rules will allow them a fresh start.

With the team competition decided, the individual showjumping medals will be contested on Thursday night as the top 35 riders from last night's competition advanced to the first of two rounds.

'Need a bit of luck,' Ireland's Denis Lynch said. 'Hopefully, he [horse Lantinus] stays sound, I stay sound and nothing happens in between and then off we go.'

But world number one Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum said she was fortunate the 14 penalties she accumulated over the three qualifying rounds would not count towards the individual medal.

'In this case, I'm very lucky we start from zero,' Michaels-Beerbaum said. 'It's a new game and from Thursday I intend to be there. I feel I'm very close. I have to be better, but I'm very close.'

With her team entering last night's team final tied for eighth position and understanding it would be difficult for them to move up, Michaels-Beerbaum said she began to focus more on the individual competition, in which she is still considered a medal favourite.

'It started to shift to the individual competition,' Michaels-Beerbaum said. 'It became more of an individual game. It's a shame there was not much left [for the team competition].'
