The agency is being set up by local pig farmer Choi Chi-wai, vice-chairman of the Hong Kong Agriculture Special Zone Development Association, and will compete with the city's current live- pig suppliers, Ng Fung Hong and Guangnan Hong.

The ministry said that increasing the number of agents for direct live mainland pig imports could promote more market competition, allow more supply sources and strengthen stability.

It said the third agent was selected from eight applicants, according to their capital, sales ability, networking and reputation.

Mr Choi said he planned to invest HK$50 million and initially expected to start importing with about 500 to 1,000 pigs a day.
