Cable TV subject of all termination complaints

Customer complaints against pay-TV operators have reached unprecedented heights, with complaints in the first half of this year outstripping that for the whole of last year.

This prompted the Consumer Council to step in and meet pay-TV operators to discuss the matter. This move has resulted in a 30 per cent drop in complaints so far this month compared with last month.

Cable TV, which has been the subject of most of the complaints, yesterday reiterated the measures it had taken to improve its service.

But the council said it remained to be seen if the new measures could translate into concrete improvements. The council said it had received 3,114 complaints from January to June 25, while it had received 2,909 complaints for the whole of last year.

More than one third of the complaints - 1,101 - concerned problems in terminating contracts, while 782 were about the quality of services. Complaints against sales practices were the third most common complaint, reaching 607.

While complaints about unscrupulous sales practices involved all four pay-TV service operators, all the termination grievances were against Cable TV, a consumer council source said.
