Two Tsing Yi shipyard workers were found dead inside a fume-filled compartment of a barge yesterday. An investigation is under way into whether safety procedures were followed.

Police said the shipyard in Tam Kon Shan Road raised the alarm at about 11.45am after Lee Sa-fai, 46, and Mak Kin-shing, 51, who were working in one of the barge's concealed compartments, failed to return their supervisor's phone calls.

Tsing Yi senior fire station officer Kwok Wai-keung said when he and his colleagues reached the shipyard, the two workers had been taken out of the compartment by colleagues. They were already unconscious.

'When we arrived at the scene, neither of them had a pulse or was breathing. We continued with cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and mouth-to-mouth ventilation to try to revive them,' he said.

'We also sent our team members down to the cabin to check the area and [they] discovered the presence of an unknown toxic or explosive gas.'
