Police have promised to maintain a presence at the private road at the centre of a row between residents of Fairview Park estate, Yuen Long, and nearby villagers until Lunar New Year, residents said last night.
And operators of container storage parks in the area will urge truck drivers to use an alternative route, rather than Fairview Park Boulevard, which residents want closed to heavy trucks.
About 200 Fairview Park residents held a meeting last night to discuss the latest government response to the dispute, which flared after a boy was killed by a truck.
'The Transport Department has told us through the Home Affairs Department today that [the police] would continue to be present at the road until the New Year,' Chan Siu-man, of the Fairview Park owners' association, said.
'At the same time, owners of [container] parks have promised to show restraint ... and ask truck drivers to use Kam Pok Road.'
Mr Chan, however, warned that residents would take action if the police and truck drivers failed to observe their pledges.
Residents also demanded the government indicate by February 23 whether it will ban container trucks from the road.
