Police said a couple riding their bicycles saw what they thought was a doll in the Sheung Yu River at Lok Ma Chau at about 3.45pm.

'At the beginning, I thought it was only a doll, but when I saw the arms and legs appeared to be real, I got my husband to call the police,' the woman said.

Firemen retrieved the body and the girl was confirmed dead by medics at the scene. The baby still had its umbilical cord attached.

The infant's body was taken to Fu Shan public mortuary, where a postmortem examination will be conducted.

Police suspect the baby may have been dumped in the river by her mother in Shenzhen shortly after she gave birth and that the current carried the baby across the border into Hong Kong.
