Family of man who fell from escalator donates his organs

Bereaved relatives of a man who fell off an escalator at a Mong Kok cinema on Wednesday are to donate his organs after he died of his injuries yesterday afternoon.

Speaking on Commercial Radio, the uncle of Cheng Fai-pang said his nephew died just before 2pm, a day after doctors predicted that he could be brain dead within days.

'The relatives had unanimously agreed to donate all the organs of Cheng Fai-pang that could help others to save the lives of those in need,' Chu Wai-tat said.

'Since the world has been so unfair, we want to show that by taking this action we care about others who desperately need organ transplants because of accidents or illness and hence fulfil their needs.'

Mr Chu said further tests would be carried out to decide which of his nephew's organs could be donated.

Cheng, who worked at a Yuen Long container yard, was trying to find the toilet in the cinema when he lost his balance on the escalator and fell to the sixth floor of the Sai Yeung Choi Street outlet of Broadway Cinema. He had been at a midnight screening of Curse of the Golden Flower with a friend.

The 26-year-old, who was in a hurry as he went the wrong way down the escalator from the eighth floor, lost his balance when he tried to turn around.
