While celebrities such as Jennifer Lopez and Victoria Beckham choose to flaunt their pink diamonds in public, Hong Kong's exclusive clientele like to keep their rocks under wraps.

According to diamond dealer Pablo Baldinger, of MercuryINX, only a small number of Hong Kong's high society understand the value of pink diamonds, and they are low-key about their interest.

'I would say fewer than 30 people in Hong Kong have tender-quality pink diamonds. They are high net-worth individuals who prefer to keep it quiet and avoid the publicity,' said one bidder at this year's Pink Tender.

'Those who have 10-carat D-colour diamonds get them for more exclusivity. The general masses do not understand what the difference is. It's like someone who buys an HK$80 bottle of wine at the supermarket and cannot understand why someone would pay HK$5,000 for a bottle of wine. It is a very exclusive and niche market.'

Mr Baldinger, whose family has been in the diamond business in Hong Kong since 1967, said many people still believed pink diamonds were only valuable when they were light pink and very big.

'A light-pink diamond costs two to three times the price of a D-colour white diamond but a strong red one costs 50 times that price.
