An appearance by Mike Tyson for the opening of a Shanghai nightclub on Thursday turned into chaos when a huge Chinese media scrum prevented the former heavyweight champion from giving a planned press conference.

Tyson, who last fought in June when he failed to answer the seventh-round bell for a TKO loss to unheralded Briton Kevin McBride in Washington, DC, arrived in China's business capital yesterday morning for a three-day trip following a flight from England after making personal appearances in Ireland over the weekend.

Looking fit, healthy and relaxed, Tyson walked into the Snatch Bar and Nightclub at 8pm last night with his entourage, posing for photographers for about two minutes before disappearing for dinner.

The ex-champ finally re-appeared around 10pm when his entrance turned into chaos as the 39-year-old legend was forced to hop couches in the nightclub to escape the ensuing media scrum, estimated at more than 100 photographers and reporters.

Tyson, who is staying at the famous Jingjian Hotel, the same accommodation used by former United States president Richard Nixon during his historic 1972 visit to China, is scheduled to travel to nearby Luodian today for a charity golf event.
