With the look and feel of a blockbuster action movie, Quake 4 delivers the next chapter in the futuristic war between humans and the barbaric, cyborg race of the Strogg.
The first-person shooter PC game is published by Activision and developed by Raven Software, with original Quake series creator id Software serving as executive producer.
Its story picks up only moments after the events of the 1997-released Quake II, with the Earth's fleet launching a massive offensive against the planet Stroggos. The series jumped to Quake 4 because Quake III Arena, published in 1999, was based on an unrelated plot.
Gamers play the role of Marine Corporal Matthew Kane, a member of the elite Rhino Squad tasked to penetrate deep into the heart of the Strogg army and engage in a series of missions to destroy the alien enemy.
In the game's opening sequence, the squad's ship is shot down and most of the team members die. Despite that, Kane and the remaining members move forward to complete a number of missions.
But in this epic war between worlds, gamers will find the only way to defeat the Strogg is to become one of them. So the Strogg manage to capture Kane, who is forced to undergo a horrific process that would turn him into a cyborg. Before the soldier becomes another part-man, part-machine Strogg, his comrades come to the rescue.
Kane retains his humanity but gains extraordinary abilities from his Strogg half. His powers enable him to invade alien strongholds alone or alongside other Marines, and fight in mechanised walkers and hover-tanks in incredible combat missions against the Strogg.
