Alonso win puts French carmaker back in business, as McLaren challenge stalls
Spain's Fernando Alonso held his nerve in an eventful Chinese Grand Prix yesterday to seal the constructors' title for his team Renault, adding the silver lining to the drivers' title he won last month.
The win was Alonso's seventh in what has been a terrific season for him. The 24-year-old Spaniard became the sport's youngest champion in Brazil last month.
'This is a fantastic feeling. The race was actually very easy. We only used full power on the engine in the first part and we saw we were quicker than everybody so we turned things down and went conservative for the second part,' said Alonso.
'We showed that when we want to push, and take the risks, we can win races.'
The weather was sunny and warm, but the Shanghai circuit was slightly more subdued than last year for what was the second Chinese Grand Prix, with around 130,000 spectators in the track, shy of last year's 150,000. But earlier fears that attendances would nosedive proved unfounded.
