A vote of confidence was given to the mainland's internet market by experts attending the Fortune Global Forum in Beijing yesterday, despite the country's strict controls on cyberspace.

The central government had proved eager to form partnerships with the private sector, said Charles Zhang, president and chief executive of Sohu.com, a Nasdaq-listed mainland internet service provider.

He said many of the mainland's bureaucrats were avid users of the internet who were in their 30s and 40s.

Mr Zhang described the extensive government supervision of the internet as 'part of our daily Confucian government', which meant well in seeking to protect people from harmful information.

Meg Whitman, president and chief executive of eBay, said she thought the central government had displayed 'quite remarkable' openness.
