Hutchison Ports Holdings (HPH) has agreed to develop and run up to three berths at two terminals in the ports of Alexandria and El Dekheila on Egypt's Mediterranean coast.
HPH, with a consortium led by the Alexandria Port Authority, will convert two general cargo terminals - one at each port - into container handling facilities.
The two terminals will be converted to a depth of 12 metres, with quay lengths of 380 metres at the Alexandria facility and 560 metres at El Dekheila.
The length of the El Dekheila quay implies that two smaller berths could be developed there, according to an HPH spokesman. He declined to disclose the investment that will be needed to complete the project, saying only that the plan was to complete the project in phases.
The first phase will be completed by the end of this year, he said.
'The Egyptian government's policy to attract foreign direct investment by partnering with multinational companies will contribute to the growing economy of Egypt,' said Mohamed Youssef, chairman of Alexandria Port Authority.
