Did the earth move for you when England thrashed Germany?
By now you may have just got your head back to some sort of normality after the earth-shattering events in Munich last Saturday.
Talk about a 'Do not adjust your set' moment. For England to win 5-1 away to Germany (on CABLE Sports) was so inconceivable it was a television experience akin to watching Fantasy Island (if youre an England fan) or The Twilight Zone (if a German).
The world was knocked off its axis by that match, make no mistake. Germany, never previously beaten at home in a World Cup qualifier, had that proud record ripped away from them and smashed into smithereens by Sven Goran Eriksson's fast-maturing young lions.
It could not have been a more cataclysmic expression of a) the arrival of new England and b) the demise of old Germany. The soundtrack clearly picked up the sound of England fans in the stadium chanting 'We want six'. That was surreal.
Maybe it was a watershed moment in the annals of the international game. Time will tell on that one. Germany should still qualify but they have been stripped of their armour of invincibility and look decidedly vulnerable in a way they haven't in the past 50 years.
The weekend also marked another seismic shift on the European scene as Holland were effectively eliminated from World Cup qualifying for the first time since 1986. The Dutch have for so long been the epitome of intelligent, cultured soccer, the progenitors of total football. But earlier that same Saturday the men in orange were exposed as embarrassingly unimaginative in their efforts to break down 10-man Ireland (also on CABLE Sports).
Yes Ireland rode their luck and yes Holland missed a hatful of good chances and yes the Dutch had the lions share of possession. But ultimately with all the talent at their disposal and with coaching genius Louis van Gaal, Holland's only answer when they trailed 1-0 needing a win was to hoof balls into the box.
